My favorite thing about the hike to Fern Lake was Fern Falls. It's this glorious waterfall that rewards you with a refreshing mist for making it about half way to the lake.
Fern Lake is a popular lake for fly fishers.
This is why we hiked to Fern Lake.
Ethan has recently become addicted to fly fishing and what better way to force him to hike along with me than to lure him in with the words "but you can bring your rod!".
So at the lake, he fished and I hammocked and photographed and enjoyed mountain life.
Trail: Fern Lake
Trailhead: Fern Lake Trailhead
Directions from Boulder: take HWY 36 all the way to Estes Park. Turn left onto Big Thompson Ave and attempt to not hit a tourist. Take a left onto Moraine Ave and follow this along all the way to the Rocky Mountain National Park entrance station. Once through, take the first left onto Bear Lake Road. Follow along until you can take a right onto Moraine Park Rd. This will take you to the Fern Lake Trailhead Parking lot. This lot is tiny and fills up pretty early in the morning. You can park in the additional parking lot but it's just shy of a mile walk to the trailhead.
Cheers to these perfect colorado days.
